What Physical Contact Is Allowed During Contact Visits at Lewis Unit
Contact visits at Lewis Unit allow some physical contact—but it's limited and closely monitored. Here's what you can do without risking your visit being cut short.
Hugs and kisses are allowed twice: once when the visit starts and once when it ends. A quick embrace when you first sit down, another when you say goodbye - that's it. Between those moments, stick to the other permitted contact.
You can hold hands during the visit, but keep them on top of the table where staff can see them. Hands under the table or out of sight will get noticed fast.
Expect to sit across from each other, not side-by-side - inmates and visitors are seated on opposite sides of the table. The one exception: young children can be held by the inmate during the visit.
Assume your visit is being watched and recorded. All visits - except attorney-client meetings - are subject to electronic monitoring. That's a big reason staff expect you to follow the physical-contact rules closely.
Sec4
- ✓ Keep hugs and kisses to one greeting at the start and one goodbye at the end of the contact visit.
- ✓ If you hold hands, keep both hands on top of the table where staff can see them.
- ✓ Sit on opposite sides of the table (not next to each other) during the visit.
- ✓ If you’re bringing young children, know that the inmate may hold their young children.
- ✓ Act like the visit is being monitored - because, unless it’s an attorney-client visit, it can be electronically monitored.
Note: Attorney-client visits are the exception to monitoring. Other inmate visits are subject to electronic monitoring.
