Sending Books and Magazines to Logan After Sept. 30, 2025: What Changed
Sending books or magazines to someone at Logan? The rules change on Sept. 30, 2025. Here's what's different and how to make sure your package actually gets through.
Starting September 30, 2025, publications only get accepted if they're mailed directly from the publisher. That's the big shift - you can no longer bring books, magazines, or other reading material to Logan (or any facility) and drop them off for someone specific.
The postmark date is what counts. Anything postmarked September 30, 2025 or earlier will still be accepted under the old rules. After that, it has to come directly from a publisher.

Tip:
Some materials don't have to come from a publisher. If it's going to the Office of Adult Education and Vocational Services, another approved program, the facility library, or a religious program, the publisher-only rule doesn't apply.
Note: Sending something for a program, the library, or a religious group? Confirm it's actually tied to an approved program before you mail it.
How to Send
- ✓ Order the book or magazine from a sender that qualifies as a “publisher” under IDOC’s definition (publisher, book club, bookstore/distributor, religious ministry, educational institution, or qualifying government mail-order source)
- ✓ Make sure the seller ships directly to the individual in custody (not to you first)
- ✓ Address individual-in-custody mail as: Individual in Custody Name & IDOC#; P.O. Box 1000; Lincoln, IL 62656
- ✓ If you need the facility’s business mail address for correspondence, use: 1096 1350th Street (P.O. Box 1000); Lincoln, IL 62656
- Confirm the sender qualifies as a “publisher” - IDOC includes book clubs, bookstores/distributors, religious ministries, educational institutions, and some government mail-order sources in addition to traditional publishers.
- Place the order so it ships straight to Logan - after Sept. 30, 2025, publications for individuals in custody must be mailed directly from the publisher.
- Watch the postmark if you’re mailing right at the cutoff - publications with a postmark of Sept. 30, 2025 or earlier will be accepted.
- Keep your order confirmation or tracking info - if there’s an issue with how it was shipped or addressed, having proof of where it came from helps you troubleshoot faster.
Reminder: Materials going to approved programs, the facility library, or religious programs are treated differently than personal publications sent to an individual.
