Madison's Jewelry and Personal Items Policy: What You Can and Can't Bring Inside
Madison Corrections Institution has strict rules about what you can carry or wear into visitation. Use this checklist to avoid getting turned away at the door for jewelry, phones, or pocket items.
Quick Essentials
- ✓ Leave phones outside. Phones are not permitted into the compound.
- ✓ Do not bring cash or coins into the compound.
- ✓ Do not bring debit cards or wallets into the compound.
- ✓ Empty your pockets for inspection, and turn them inside out if possible.
- ✓ Be ready to go through the metal detector. You must clear it to be permitted entry.
The ring policy is straightforward: only wedding rings or wedding bands are allowed. All other rings stay home, no matter how small or meaningful.
Earrings must be basic studs or hoops. Anything larger than one inch will need to be removed so the Entry Officer can inspect it before you enter.
Necklaces are not permitted at all. If you wear one daily, leave it at home rather than dealing with it at the entrance.
Bracelets are restricted too. The only exception is silicone wristbands, and even those must be removed for inspection by the Entry Officer before you go in.
Leave your watch at home. Madison does not allow watches of any kind, and that includes Fitbits and other wearable devices.
Skip the camouflage entirely. Camo is banned in all forms: jackets, pants, hats, or anything else.
- Empty your pockets. Pockets must be emptied for inspection, and you should turn them inside out if possible.
- Clear the metal detector. You must clear the metal detector to be permitted entry.
Medical screening note: If you have a joint replacement or pacemaker, bring medical documentation. Staff will use a trans-frisker, and your documentation will be kept on file for future visits.
Expect the Entry Officer to have you remove certain items for inspection before entering. Earrings larger than one inch and silicone wristbands will definitely need to come off. Keep your pockets simple: phones, cash, coins, debit cards, and wallets are not allowed into the compound at all.
