What you can and can't bring when visiting Manchester FCI: a concise checklist
Visiting Manchester FCI goes smoother when you arrive with only the essentials, dressed appropriately, and without anything prohibited. Use this quick checklist to avoid delays—or getting turned away at the door.
Think of visiting Manchester FCI like going through airport security: bring only what you truly need, dress simply, and expect screening. This checklist covers the common trouble spots - eligibility, search consent, prohibited items, and dress-code basics - so you can walk in prepared.
You can only visit if the inmate has added you to their approved visiting list and the Bureau of Prisons has cleared you. The institution may run background checks - including checks with law enforcement or crime-information agencies - to determine whether adding you creates any management concerns for the facility.
Entering - or even attempting to enter - Manchester FCI grounds means consenting to a search of your person and belongings under Bureau policy and 28 C.F.R. Part 511. Pack light. The less you bring, the faster you'll get through screening.
Heads up: If you refuse a search, you can be denied entry.
Prohibited Items
- ✓ Weapons
- ✓ Explosives
- ✓ Drugs or intoxicants
- ✓ Currency
- ✓ Cameras (of any type)
- ✓ Recording equipment
- ✓ Telephones
- ✓ Radios
- ✓ Pagers
- ✓ Other electronic devices
The following categories are specifically prohibited for visitors. Show up with any of these and you'll have problems - best case, you're told to remove them from the grounds; worst case, you're denied visitation entirely. Leave them at home or secured elsewhere before you arrive.
- Do a pocket-and-bag sweep before you leave - make sure you aren’t carrying any prohibited items like weapons, explosives, drugs/intoxicants, currency, or electronics (phones, cameras, recording devices, radios, pagers).
- Keep what you bring to a minimum - the more items you carry in, the more there is to screen, and electronics in particular are specifically prohibited.
- Dress for a family setting - wear clothing that’s appropriate for a large gathering; provocative or revealing outfits can get you denied.
- Expect to be searched at the entrance - by attempting to enter the grounds, you’re consenting to a search of you and your belongings, so build that into your plan and arrive ready for screening.
- ✓ If you’re unsure whether an item is allowed, call ahead before you travel.
- ✓ Even with general guidance, the final call on what comes in is made on-site during screening.
