MDC release-scam warning: how to spot it and verify a release
If someone calls claiming they can
MDC has issued a clear warning: scammers are targeting families of MDC inmates by offering to secure a release in exchange for cash. MDC’s position is equally clear on what “real” communication looks like - MDC will never call you asking for money to release an inmate. If someone reaches out unexpectedly and the conversation turns into payment, assume you’re being set up and switch to verification through official channels.
Warning: MDC will NEVER call you asking for money to release an inmate.
The scam MDC is warning about is straightforward: someone contacts you and claims they can get an MDC inmate released if you pay cash. The hook is urgency - making you feel like you have to act right now or you’ll “miss the chance.” The safest way to handle any of these calls is to assume the caller is not legitimate and verify release information independently, rather than trying to argue, negotiate, or “confirm” details with the person who contacted you.
Tip: Don’t send money or share financial information with anyone claiming they can secure a release from MDC.
- Check the county releaselist - Bernalillo County maintains an online “releaselist” that shows all county inmates released within the past two weeks.
- Call MDC using the official phone number - Contact MDC directly at (505) 839-8700 and ask your release-related question using the publicly listed number, not a number a caller gives you.
- Email MDC for non-urgent questions - If you don’t need an immediate answer, send your inquiry to mdc@bernco.gov so you have a written record of what you asked.
Timing matters when you’re trying to reach the right place. MDC’s administrative offices are open Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the MDC information desk is staffed 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. If you call outside those windows and can’t get what you need right away, don’t default back to the person who contacted you - stick with official MDC channels and try again during staffed hours.
Reminder: If you’re trying to confirm whether someone was recently released, the Bernalillo County two-week releaselist is the place to check first - not an unsolicited caller’s story.

- ✓ Don’t send cash or provide payment/account information to a caller offering a release.
- ✓ Write down what happened: the phone number (if you have it), the time of the call, and exactly what the person asked for.
- ✓ Verify and report using official MDC contacts: call (505) 839-8700 or email mdc@bernco.gov.
- ✓ If you need to handle it in person or by written correspondence, use MDC’s address: 100 Deputy Dean Miera Dr. SW, Albuquerque, NM 87151.
The goal is simple: stop the scammer from steering you, and move the conversation back to MDC’s official channels. When you contact MDC at (505) 839-8700 or by email at mdc@bernco.gov, stick to the basics of what you’re trying to verify and share the details you documented about the suspicious call. That helps you protect yourself and helps MDC understand what families are being targeted with.
