How to send mail to someone at MSDF (what goes to TextBehind, prohibited items, and what happens to originals)

MSDF uses TextBehind for all non-privileged (non-legal) mail. If you send it to the wrong address or include prohibited items, your mail could be delayed, returned, or destroyed after processing.

Send non-privileged personal mail for someone at MSDF to TextBehind at P.O. Box 189, Phoenix, MD 21131. On the envelope, include your return name and address, the person's full name (first and last), their DOC number, and MSDF as the facility name. All of that is needed for proper routing.

TextBehind runs non-privileged mail through its scanning system, but medical and legal mail get different treatment. TextBehind will not open or photocopy mail that's clearly marked as medical or legal. Instead, legal mail received by TextBehind is forwarded intact to the institution.

Tip: Sending legal or medical mail? Label it clearly on the envelope. For any mail going through TextBehind, double-check the person's full name, DOC number, and your return address before dropping it in the mailbox.

TextBehind does not keep originals. After scanning, all original contents, envelopes, and even pre-paid self-addressed envelopes are shredded by an NSA-certified third-party service 30 days later.

Important: Do not mail anything you need returned in original form. Originals processed by TextBehind are shredded after 30 days.

Cards Photos

  • No musical cards
  • No pop-up cards
  • No glitter
  • No multi-thickness cards
  • No cards with items glued to them
  • Use a smooth-surface card so it can be accepted for copying

You can include photos with non-privileged personal mail sent through TextBehind to someone at MSDF. Just know that everything processed through TextBehind is scanned, and originals aren't kept long-term. After scanning, original contents (along with envelopes and any pre-paid self-addressed envelopes) are shredded 30 days later.

Prohibited Return

  • Gift cards (returned to sender)
  • Cash (returned to sender)
  • Personal checks (returned to sender)

If the person at MSDF is sending outgoing non-privileged (non-legal) mail, their return address must be P.O. Box 189, Phoenix, MD 21131. They should not use the facility's address as the FROM/return address for non-privileged mail.
