What to Bring (and What to Leave Behind) When Visiting New Haven Correction Center

Every adult visitor needs a valid photo ID. Staff check identification at the facility, and no ID means no entry. Bringing a child? Have their documents ready too (see the checklist below) - you don't want to be digging through your car at the last minute.

  • Valid birth certificate (required for all visitors under age 16)
  • One additional document with the child’s name (for example: a report card or Social Security card)

Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled visit. Show up late and the facility may cut your visit short - or cancel it entirely.

Warning: Cell phones and electronics aren't allowed inside. Leave them locked in your car before you get to the door.

Travel light. Bring only your ID and any required paperwork for children - leave everything else at home or locked in your car. The less you carry, the faster you'll get through check-in.

New Haven limits visits to two visitors total - children included. Double-check your headcount before you go. If your group is larger, someone will have to wait outside.

  • Birth certificate for each visitor under 16
  • One extra document that shows the child’s name (such as a report card or Social Security card)
  • A quick headcount before you leave: only two visitors total are allowed per in-person visit, including children

  1. Ask what caused the turn-away - Get the specific reason (missing ID, missing child documents, timing, or something else) so you don’t repeat it.
  2. Confirm what to bring next time - Read back what you plan to arrive with (adult photo ID, and for kids: birth certificate plus one additional document with the child’s name).
  3. Double-check your visitor count - Make sure your group will be no more than two people total, including children.
  4. Show up early on the retry - Arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time so you have room for check-in.
