Every adult visitor needs a valid photo ID. You'll show it at check-in, and without it, you won't get through the door. Not sure if your ID qualifies? Figure it out before you go - getting turned away at the entrance is frustrating, and it's avoidable.

Bringing a child under 16? Pack their paperwork. Connecticut DOC requires a valid birth certificate plus one additional document with the child's name - a report card or Social Security card works. Gather these ahead of time. Juggling kids and travel is stressful enough without scrambling for documents at check-in.

Leave your cell phone and electronics at home - or at minimum, in your car. Connecticut DOC doesn't allow them inside, and showing up with one can end your visit before it begins. The safest bet: carry only your ID and any required documents for children. Nothing else.

Legal warning: Bringing an electronic wireless communication device into a correctional institution - or using one to take photos or digital images inside - is a crime in Connecticut, and violators will be prosecuted.

Don't bring anything that could be considered contraband. Under Connecticut law, it's a crime to bring controlled drugs, alcohol, firearms, weapons, explosives, U.S. currency, or escape-related items like ropes or ladders into a facility. When in doubt, leave it behind. One bad decision can turn a visit into a criminal charge.

Visitor Limits Checkin

Give yourself extra time. Traffic, parking, and the check-in line can all eat into your schedule. Connecticut DOC is strict about timing - arrive late and your visit could be cut short or canceled entirely.
