What Happens If You Have Unclaimed Money in an Inmate Account (How to Claim It)

To claim leftover money from a Connecticut Department of Correction inmate account, fill out an Unclaimed Inmate Account form and mail it to: Connecticut Department of Correction, 24 Wolcott Hill Road, Wethersfield, CT 06109, Attn: Inmate Accounts.

Don't want to mail it? You can fax the completed form to (860) 692-7894 instead.

Only the account holder can sign. Someone else can't sign the Unclaimed Inmate Account form on their behalf - it has to be completed and signed by the person who owned the account.

The reimbursement check follows that same rule. Connecticut DOC issues the check payable only to the person who completes and signs the Unclaimed Inmate Account form.

Cash the check quickly. If it isn't cashed within 12 months from the issue date, it gets voided and the money transfers to the Correctional General Welfare fund.

The unclaimed list has a one-year deadline too. Inmate numbers stay on the list for one year unless the funds are claimed. After that, any remaining balance is forfeited and transferred to the Correctional General Welfare Fund.

Practical-tips

  • Submit the Unclaimed Inmate Account form as soon as you see the inmate number on the unclaimed list so you don’t run into the one-year forfeiture deadline.
  • Use the submission method that’s fastest for you: mail it to Connecticut Department of Correction, 24 Wolcott Hill Road, Wethersfield, CT 06109, Attn: Inmate Accounts, or fax it to (860) 692-7894.
  • Keep a copy of what you send (and the date you sent it) so you can track the request if you need to follow up later.
