First visit after arrival to North Fork: the 30-day exception for new inmates

If your loved one just arrived at North Fork from a reception center and their approved visiting list hasn't come through yet, there's a narrow exception that may allow one family visit within the first 30 days.

This temporary visit exception kicks in when an inmate transfers to North Fork from the Lexington Assessment and Reception Center (LARC) or Mabel Bassett Assessment and Reception Center (MBARC) and doesn't arrive with an approved visitors list. If that's the case, family members already listed in the inmate's field file may be allowed one visit within 30 days, before the visiting forms make it back (by mail) to unit staff.

To use the temporary visit allowance and get on the approved visitors list long-term, you'll need to complete the Visitor Request Form (DOC 030118B). This form is the starting point for visiting approval at North Fork. It's also what family submits in the new-arrival situation when the inmate comes from LARC or MBARC without an approved visiting list.

  • Complete the Visitor Request Form (DOC 030118B).
  • Fill it out with your identifying and contact information so it can be processed.

If you're 18 or older, expect a background check as part of the approval process. That check can take up to eight weeks, so a wait between submitting paperwork and being fully approved is normal.

North Fork staff will notify the inmate once the background check is complete, and the inmate is the one who passes that update along to you. If you're planning around work, childcare, or travel, keep in mind that your first full, approved visit may not happen right away, even if the temporary 30-day visit is allowed.

Note: The 30-day visit is a temporary accommodation for new arrivals. It doesn't replace the standard approval process, and background checks for adults can take up to eight weeks.

For that first visit, bring your photo ID. If you're bringing children under 18, you'll also need documentation showing parentage or guardianship (for example, a birth certificate or adoption papers).

  • Government-issued photo ID for adult visitors
  • Documentation for minors (birth certificate, adoption papers, or similar guardianship documentation)
  • Visitor Request Form (DOC 030118B), completed
