At Oakland County Jail, all visits happen by video. There's no sitting across a table from your loved one. You schedule appointments yourself through Smart Communications, and you can visit either on-site at the jail or remotely from home. The key distinction: social visits versus professional visits. Social visits are for family and friends, available Wednesday through Sunday only (no Mondays or Tuesdays). Professional visits have broader hours and run every day of the week.

Reminder: All inmate visits are video visits, and appointments must be scheduled by the visitor through Smart Communications.

Social visits for family and friends aren't available on Mondays or Tuesdays. Wednesday through Friday, social visits run from 1:15 PM to 8:15 PM. Weekends offer longer windows: Saturday and Sunday from 9:15 AM to 7:00 PM. These hours apply whether you're visiting on-site or remotely.

  • Only the person who registered as the visitor may attend the visit.
  • One adult visitor and one child visitor are allowed per visit.
  • Visits are either 15 minutes or 30 minutes long.

Cost depends on how you visit. Remote visits from a computer or phone cost $0.11 (11 credits) per minute. On-site visits at the jail are free. Each inmate gets one free visit and one paid visit per week. Plan ahead to make the most of both options.

Professional visits run every day from 7:15 AM to 8:45 PM, both on-site and remote. If you need weekday flexibility, professional hours are your best bet.

Reminder: Professional visits also use the video visitation system and must be scheduled through Smart Communications.

  1. Create your visit appointment in Smart Communications - all visits are video visits and are booked by the visitor.
  2. Schedule at least 24 hours ahead - same-day booking does not meet the jail’s scheduling requirement.
  3. Use the two-week window - you can schedule visits up to two weeks in advance.
  4. Choose a time inside the correct visit hours - pick a start time that falls within the published social or professional windows.

Tip: Keep your confirmation handy. Visits require at least 24 hours advance booking, so having your details ready helps avoid mix-ups that could cost you an appointment.
