Why Your Prepaid Card Keeps Getting Declined on JailATM (And What to Do Instead)
If your prepaid card keeps getting declined on JailATM, you're not alone. Most of the time, the problem isn't your balance. It's how the transaction is processed and what your card actually allows.
JailATM processes deposit payments as cash advance transactions. That's a big deal, because cash advances are handled differently than a normal online purchase. Many card issuers place extra limits on them by default.
Note: Because deposits run as cash advances, some cards will decline even if they work fine for regular purchases. Prepaid cards are especially likely to fail.
JailATM does not support prepaid cards, so a decline is the expected result for most prepaid Visa or prepaid MasterCard products. You'll typically see a "declined" or "transaction failed" message at checkout, even when the card is active and has plenty of funds.
Here's why. JailATM deposits are treated as cash advances, so the card needs to allow cash-advance-style authorizations. Many prepaid programs simply don't permit that transaction type. Some issuers also block cash advances as a fraud or risk-control measure. Either way, the result on your end looks the same: payment denied.
Tip: JailATM's website is not designed for mobile devices, and mobile access is not supported. If you're seeing glitches or confusing errors on your phone, try the same deposit again on a computer.
JailATM lists Visa and MasterCard as accepted payment methods for deposits. Other cards may occasionally work, but if a card isn't on that list, it's not officially supported. You can waste a lot of time retrying a payment that will keep failing.
- ✓ Use a Visa or MasterCard debit card from a bank or credit union (not a prepaid product)
- ✓ Use a Visa or MasterCard credit card, if you have one that allows cash-advance type transactions
- ✓ Avoid prepaid cards for JailATM deposits, since prepaid cards are not supported
- Confirm whether your card is prepaid. If it’s a reloadable prepaid card, that alone can explain the decline because prepaid cards are not supported.
- Switch to a supported Visa or MasterCard. Try a bank-issued debit card or a credit card, since those are the card types most likely to pass the authorization.
- Retry the deposit on a computer. Mobile devices are not supported on the site, and mobile issues can make it harder to tell whether you’re dealing with a real decline or a website problem.
- Call the number on the back of your card. Ask whether the card allows cash advance transactions, since JailATM deposits are processed as cash advances.
- Call JailATM customer service. For additional help, contact JailATM Customer Service at 1-877-810-0914 and tell them your deposit is being declined.
Quick reality check: Even supported cards can be declined if the issuer blocks cash advances. Your fastest path forward is usually to (1) confirm cash-advance permission with your card issuer and (2) call JailATM support at 1-877-810-0914 if the payment still won't go through.
