How to Send Mail to Pima County Jail: Postcards, Letters, Money Orders, and What Gets Rejected

Mail rules at Pima County Jail are strict, and one small detail can mean the difference between your mail getting delivered or sent back. Here's what you need to know about postcards, letters, legal mail, and money orders.

Postcards can't be larger than 4.25 inches by 6 inches. Anything bigger will be rejected.

Your loved one won't receive the original postcard. Incoming postcards are copied (digitally or by photocopy), and the inmate gets the copy, either through a tablet or on paper.

Time limit: Postcards are destroyed after 14 calendar days.

Keep postcards clean and unaltered. Any postcard that's been defaced or modified will be rejected.

Don't put postcards in plastic sleeves or wrap them in anything. The facility won't accept wrapped postcards.

Skip the glitter. Postcards with glitter won't be accepted.

The jail is strict about envelopes and postage. Legal mail must be sent in pre-printed or pre-stamped postage envelopes, or with metered postage. The same rule applies to non-legal letters. Also, letters written with gel pens are no longer accepted and will be returned to the sender.

Legal mail also has content-format rules. Only loose paper is allowed. Nothing bound, stapled, or fastened in any way. If you send legal mail in a manila envelope, the envelope will be confiscated and destroyed. The Corrections Bureau provides replacement manila envelopes for storing legal documents.

  1. Get prior permission - The inmate must have authorization before receiving an incoming package.
  2. Handle authorization early - Authorization must be obtained 5 days before the package is sent.
  3. Do not mail commissary items - The inmate cannot receive any item that is available through the facility commissary.

Mail is processed Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. All personal mail going into or out of the facility must be sent through U.S. Mail.

Mail screening: All mail is subject to search. It won't be read unless there's an active investigation.
