Getting through RGCI's metal detector: what happens if you can't clear it

RGCI requires every visitor to pass through a metal detector before entering the visiting area. If you have an implant or another medical reason that might set it off, a little paperwork ahead of time can prevent a wasted trip.

At Redgranite Correctional Institution (RGCI), every visitor must pass through and clear the metal detector to be admitted. If you can't clear it after three attempts, your visit is denied. Take the screening seriously. Simplify what you bring and wear so you don't hit a last-minute snag at the door.

If you have a medical condition that could affect metal detector screening (a metal pin, for example), RGCI requires medical verification before you'll be allowed in. The facility has a specific form for this: the Visitor Requesting Accommodations form (DOC-2424), which needs to be completed with verification from a doctor. Plan ahead, because the paperwork must be submitted to the institution before your visit. This isn't something that can be handled as a last-minute exception at check-in.

Timing matters: Get the DOC-2424 medical verification to the institution before your visit. If you don't, you'll be turned away at the entrance.

  • Use the RGCI lobby lockers for vehicle keys and any items that are not allowed inside the institution.
  • Get a locker token from the Lobby Officer.
  • Do not bring purses into the visiting room.
  • Do not bring billfolds into the visiting room.

If you arrive with items you can't bring inside, RGCI provides lockers in the lobby for vehicle keys and other prohibited property. You'll need a token to use a locker, available from the Lobby Officer. Build a little extra time into your arrival for that step.
