RGCI Metal Detector & Security Screening: What to Expect and How to Pass
Security screening at Redgranite Correctional Institution (RGCI) is strict—but manageable if you come prepared. The two things that trip people up most: the metal detector's "three tries" rule and how fast a small oversight can get your visit denied.
Every visitor at RGCI must walk through and clear the metal detector. You get three attempts. Fail all three, and your visit is denied - no exceptions. Think of it as a hard cutoff, not a minor inconvenience. Repeated beeps can end your visit before it even begins.

- ✓ Extra jewelry (multiple rings, bracelets, watches)
- ✓ Belts with metal buckles
- ✓ Coins and other pocket change
- ✓ Cell phones (not permitted in the institution)
- ✓ Weapons (not permitted in the institution)
- ✓ Drugs (not permitted in the institution)
- ✓ Tobacco products (not permitted in the institution)
- ✓ Alcohol (not permitted in the institution)
The metal detector doesn't just catch obvious stuff. Forgotten coins in a pocket, a belt buckle, too much jewelry - these small items can trigger alerts and burn through your three attempts fast. If you're already cutting it close on time, those repeated beeps could be the difference between seeing your person and getting turned away at the door.
Three failed metal detector attempts means a denied visit. But timing matters too: arrive more than 30 minutes after your scheduled start time, and you won't be admitted regardless. So if screening drags on - troubleshooting alerts, emptying pockets, trying again - you can lose your visit two ways: hitting the attempt limit or running past the 30-minute cutoff.
Tip: If you're denied, plan your next visit around the scheduled start time. Showing up more than 30 minutes late means you won't get in, even if everything else checks out.
- Confirm your scheduled start time and plan to be early - visitors aren’t admitted more than 30 minutes past the scheduled start time, and screening delays can eat up that window.
- Do a “pocket and jewelry check” before you enter - empty your pockets completely and remove belts or extra jewelry so you don’t waste your three metal-detector attempts.
- Use the lobby lockers for items you can’t take inside - lockers are provided in the lobby for vehicle keys and other items not allowed in the institution, and you can get tokens from the Lobby Officer.
- Keep prohibited items out of your bag and out of your car’s “grab zone” - don’t bring cell phones, drugs, tobacco, alcohol, or weapons to the institution.
Warning: Drugs, tobacco, alcohol, cell phones, and weapons are prohibited - bringing them in can result in felony prosecution. Use the lobby lockers for anything you can't take inside. Tokens are available from the Lobby Officer.
