RGCI visiting room rules: physical contact, food, children, and games (FAQ)
Visiting someone at RGCI is much easier when you know the exact do's and don'ts ahead of time. Here are the visiting room rules families ask about most, covering physical contact, kids, food, photos, and games.
At Redgranite Correctional Institution (RGCI), you and the person in custody (PIOC) can share a brief embrace and kiss at the beginning and end of the visit. That's it. No other physical contact is allowed during the visit itself. If you're not sure whether something counts as "physical contact," keep it simple: save the hug and kiss for hello and goodbye.
Warning: Excessive displays of affection are not permitted. Embracing or kissing during the visit (outside the greeting and goodbye) can lead to disciplinary action, including loss of visiting privileges.
Bringing a baby or toddler? Diapers must be changed in the lobby restroom only. The PIOC is not allowed to take children to the restroom, so you'll need to handle all bathroom trips and diaper changes yourself.
Breastfeeding is allowed during visitation, but only in a pre-designated area of the visiting room. If you think you'll need it, ask staff where that area is when you arrive. Much easier than trying to figure it out mid-visit.
You can't freely pass items back and forth in the visiting room. The one exception: vending machine and bakery items can be shared between you and the PIOC without staff approval. Everything else needs approval from visiting room staff before it changes hands.
Bakery items for the PIOC are purchased through a PIOC disbursement. Visitors aren't allowed at the bakery counter, so don't plan on walking up to order or pick anything up directly.
- Stay seated during the visit: The PIOC must remain seated except for taking photos, checking out games, or purchasing RGCI bakery items.
- Have the PIOC check out games with their lanyard: Games are checked out by the PIOC using their lanyard.
- Expect staff inspections: Visiting room staff will inspect the game before it is issued and again when it is returned.
RGCI is strict about what can leave the visiting room with the PIOC. They may take out up to five photos taken by the institution photo project during the visit, plus one picture colored by their children during the visit. Visitors can take home any leftover vending machine and bakery items. And remember the passing rule: only vending machine and bakery items can be exchanged without staff approval. Anything else needs a staff okay first.
If rules are broken: Indiscreet conduct or excessive displays of affection can result in disciplinary action, including removal of visiting privileges.
