Sending Mail to Someone at RGCI: How TextBehind Works, What’s Copied, and Card Rules
Want your letter, photos, or card to reach someone at Redgranite Correctional Institution (RGCI)? Here's the key: most personal mail goes to TextBehind for scanning first—not directly to the prison.
Personal (non-privileged) mail to someone at RGCI goes to TextBehind for scanning. On your envelope, include your full return name and address, plus the recipient's full name (first and last), their DOC number, and the facility name. Send it to: Redgranite Correctional Facility, P.O. Box 189, Phoenix, MD 21131. Missing or incomplete information? Your mail will be returned as undeliverable.
Note: Don't send gift cards, cash, or personal checks - they'll be returned. To add money to someone's account, use Access Corrections instead.
Legal and medical mail works differently. TextBehind won't open or process identifiable medical or legal correspondence - it gets forwarded intact to the institution. Absentee ballots also count as privileged mail, so send those directly to Redgranite Correctional Institution, not TextBehind.
What Is Copied and Photos
- ✓ Musical cards (anything that plays sound)
- ✓ Pop-up cards
- ✓ Cards with glitter
- ✓ Multi-thickness cards
- ✓ Cards with items glued onto them
- ✓ Any of the above may be denied because TextBehind will not copy them
Photos can be combined onto a single printed page. TextBehind may place up to four photos on one 8x11" sheet, and that sheet counts as one photo regardless of how many images are on it. One warning: if any photo on the page is inappropriate, the entire page gets denied. Don't mix questionable images with safe ones.
Sending something with color - drawings, photos, birthday cards? TextBehind copies it in color. Your loved one will see the colors you intended, even though they're receiving a copy rather than the original.
Once TextBehind scans your mail, the originals don't stick around. Everything - contents, envelopes, even pre-paid self-addressed envelopes - gets shredded 30 days after scanning. A third-party service certified by the National Security Agency handles the shredding.
Reminder: Absentee ballots are privileged mail and should be mailed directly to Redgranite Correctional Institution - not to TextBehind.
Mail not showing up? Start by double-checking your envelope: your return name and address, the recipient's full name, their DOC number, and the facility name - all sent to P.O. Box 189 in Phoenix, Maryland. If the addressing looks right and you still can't track it down, contact TextBehind's family support for mail-processing questions. For mail that was wrongly denied or mishandled after reaching the institution, use RGCI's normal complaint channels.
