Sending mail to someone at RGCI: how the TextBehind photocopying process works

At Redgranite Correctional Institution (RGCI), most personal (non-legal) mail gets routed through TextBehind for photocopying before it reaches the person you're writing to.

When sending non-privileged personal mail to someone at RGCI, you send it to TextBehind, not directly to the institution. Your envelope needs a few key identifiers so it gets routed correctly: your return name and address, the incarcerated person's full name and DOC number, and the facility name (Redgranite Correctional Institution). Mail the letter to P.O. Box 189, Phoenix, MD 21131.

Legal mail and identifiable medical mail are handled differently. TextBehind does not open or photocopy either type. Legal mail gets forwarded to the institution, so send it directly to RGCI. Mail from medical providers with an identifiable, verifiable return address should also go straight to the institution.

Addressing Envelope

  • Your full name and return address (on the outside of the envelope)
  • The recipient’s full name (first and last)
  • The recipient’s DOC number
  • Facility name: Redgranite Correctional Institution
  • Destination address: TextBehind, P.O. Box 189, Phoenix, MD 21131

If you include photos, TextBehind may arrange up to four of them onto a single 8x11 photocopy page. For allowance purposes, that one 8x11 page counts as a single photo, even if multiple images appear on it.

Heads up: If an inappropriate photo appears anywhere on a copied page, TextBehind will deny the entire page. That means acceptable photos on the same page can get rejected along with it.

Color doesn't automatically mean your mail will be rejected. Drawings, birthday cards, color photos: TextBehind will make color copies of these.

  • Do not send musical cards
  • Do not send pop-up cards
  • Do not send cards with glitter
  • Do not send multi-thickness cards
  • Do not send cards with anything glued on them (the card surface must be smooth)
  • Do not include gift cards, cash, or personal checks. These are unacceptable and will be returned to the sender.

Don't be surprised if the return address on a reply looks unfamiliar. Outgoing non-privileged (non-legal) mail from people in DOC care must list P.O. Box 189, Phoenix, MD 21131 as the FROM/return address.

After TextBehind scans the mail, originals are not kept long-term. Original contents, envelopes, and any pre-paid self-addressed envelopes are shredded 30 days after scanning through a third-party shredding service certified by the National Security Agency.

Need help with the mail-scanning process? Contact TextBehind through the Help Center using the CONTACT US option for customer support. They typically respond within 24 hours.
