What you can't bring to a visit at Roederer (and what happens if you try)

At Roederer, all visitors and their vehicles are subject to search - when entering, while on the grounds, and before leaving. Refuse a search before you enter? The facility can deny your visiting privileges. Refuse once you're already inside? You may be detained until law enforcement arrives.

Expect screening as part of the process. You'll go through a frisk, search, and body scanning. The safest approach: arrive with as little as possible and assume everything you bring will be inspected.

Note: Vehicles shall always remain locked while on institutional grounds.

If you refuse screening: Refusing a search can end your visit before it starts, and refusing once you’re inside can lead to detention until law enforcement arrives.

Don’t bring snacks, drinks, or even “just a water.” Roederer’s visitation rules are direct: no food or drinks shall be brought into the institution.

Leave cash and coins in your car. You won't be allowed to bring money into the visitation room, and having it on you at check-in will slow you down or force you to walk back and store it.

Contraband warning: Bringing dangerous contraband - like a firearm, liquor, or drugs - can trigger criminal charges, not just a denied visit.

Plan for limited space once you're inside: there's a maximum of three visitors per table, including children. Keep your group small and your hands free - it makes the whole visit less stressful.

Knowingly bringing dangerous contraband into Roederer is a serious crime. Under Kentucky law (KRS 520.050), this can result in a charge of Promoting Contraband in the 1st degree - a Class D felony carrying fines and up to five years imprisonment for items like a firearm, liquor, or drugs. This is general information, not legal advice. If you're worried about a specific situation, talk to a qualified attorney before you visit.

Practical Checklist Day of Visit

  • Leave all food and drinks at home or secured elsewhere; none may be brought into the institution
  • Don’t bring money into the visitation room - store it before you enter
  • Expect to be screened: you may be frisked, searched, and body scanned
  • Understand the search rule: you and your vehicle are subject to search upon entering, while on grounds, and before leaving
  • Don’t refuse screening - refusal before entry may mean denied visiting privileges, and refusal inside may mean detention until law enforcement arrives
  • Keep your vehicle locked at all times while on institutional grounds

Plan your day around the facility's entry cutoff. In-person visitation runs 8:30am–3:00pm, but the last visitors must enter by 2:00pm. Arrive after that and you'll be turned away - even if you're otherwise prepared.
