Bringing a Child to Visit Ross Correctional: Required Paperwork & Baby Items
Bringing a child to visit Ross Correctional Institution usually goes smoothly if you handle the paperwork first and pack only the allowed baby items. Here's what you need to know about approvals and limits so you don't get turned away at the door.
Before a child can visit for the first time, the facility requires a Minor Visitor Application (DRC2238). The child's custodial parent or legal guardian must complete and sign it, then submit it for approval before the visit. Start this step early. Approval isn't something you can handle at check-in.
- ✓ Birth certificate
- ✓ Change-of-custody documents (if applicable)
If someone other than the custodial parent or legal guardian is bringing the child, you'll need extra authorization. A notarized Authorization for Minor Child Visitation (DRC4371) must specify which approved guardian(s) may bring the child. Plan ahead for the notarization, and double-check that the names on the form match whoever will actually arrive with the child.
You can bring an infant carrier into visits, but staff will search it. Pack in a way that's easy to inspect quickly.
- ✓ Clear diaper bag with a reasonable number of diapers and baby wipes
- ✓ Up to three clear plastic baby bottles
- ✓ Up to three clear plastic containers of baby food
- ✓ One pacifier
- Get the child approved before you plan the first visit. The Minor Visitor Application (DRC2238) must be completed and signed by the custodial parent or legal guardian, then submitted and approved before that first visit happens.
- Bring identity and custody paperwork. A birth certificate and/or change-of-custody documents can be used to verify the child when you submit the minor visitor application.
- Use the notarized DRC4371 if the custodial parent is not coming. If someone other than the custodial parent or legal guardian is bringing the child, the visit requires a notarized Authorization for Minor Child Visitation (DRC4371) that names the approved guardian(s).
- Give yourself extra time at arrival. Visiting with kids takes longer, especially when you have an infant carrier or clear diaper bag items that need to be screened.
Note: Infant carriers and baby items are subject to search. Ross has an Imagination Library room for children where an adult may be present, but incarcerated persons are not allowed inside that room.
