How Virtual Attorney Visits Work at San Luis Regional Detention Center (VAV)

San Luis RDC's VAV program lets you hold confidential attorney–client conversations over video. The facility supports Skype, Cisco WebEx, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom.

Note: VAV offers a quick, efficient way to communicate with your client - but it doesn't replace in-person meetings.

The facility may also allow video visitation for other confidential purposes when space and scheduling permit - USCIS interviews, forensic medical evaluations, or certain child welfare-related visits, for example.

VAV sessions are strictly for legal use. Only legal representatives, legal assistants, and interpreters can participate. Family members and friends cannot join.

ID and Verification

  • Appropriate identification is required before the scheduled meeting.
  • A state bar card is an accepted form of ID.
  • Other documentation demonstrating bar membership may also be accepted.
  • Expect staff to verify your identification prior to the VAV session.

Need language support? You can bring an outside interpreter into the session. San Luis RDC allows legal representatives to connect with interpretation services during the call.

Your conversation is confidential, though basic security procedures still apply. A visitation officer will be stationed outside the confidential room during your session.

No recording: Legal representatives and their staff are not permitted to video or audio record any virtual or in-person visit, or any call, with non-citizens at San Luis RDC.

Violate the VAV rules - especially the recording prohibition - and you can lose access. Depending on the severity, the facility may suspend your privileges or revoke them permanently.
