What Families Should Know About Virtual Attorney Visits (VAV) at San Luis Detention Center

San Luis Detention Center uses Virtual Attorney Visits (VAV) for confidential attorney-client conversations via video. Sessions can be conducted through Skype, Cisco WebEx, Microsoft Teams, or Zoom. VAV is a timely alternative when an attorney can't meet in person right away - but it's not meant to replace face-to-face visits entirely. Lawyers often use VAV for urgent questions, quick check-ins, or time-sensitive filings, then schedule in-person meetings when the situation calls for it.

VAV sessions are limited to the legal team and language support. Only legal representatives, legal assistants, and interpreters can attend. Family and friends aren't allowed to join - even if you're trying to help or translate. If you need to share information with the lawyer, reach out to them directly outside the VAV session.

  • Show proof you’re a legal representative - attorneys are required to present appropriate identification (such as a bar card from any state or other documentation showing bar membership) before the scheduled VAV meeting.
  • Use the facility’s VAV contact for scheduling/questions - SLDC-Legal_visits@lasallecorrections.com.

If your loved one needs language help during a legal call, VAV can still work. The legal representative may bring in outside interpretation services during the session. VAV isn't just for attorney meetings. Video-visitation can also be used for confidential interviews with USCIS, forensic medical evaluators, or for certain special visitation purposes like child welfare - as long as space and availability allow.

VAV protects confidentiality while maintaining security. During each session, a visitation officer is stationed outside the confidential room - close enough to ensure safety, but not inside the conversation.

No recording: Legal representatives and their staff are not permitted to video or audio record any virtual or in-person visit, or any call with non-citizens at the facility. Violations can lead to suspension or permanent revocation of VAV user privileges.

The key limitation is straightforward: San Luis only allows legal representatives, legal assistants, and interpreters in VAV sessions. Family and friends can't join. If you want to help, pass information to the attorney separately or use other channels to reach your loved one. Need to get an urgent message to a detainee? Call (928) 627-2101.
