How to Handle Official Documents and Signature Requests for Someone at SCI Somerset
Need to mail an ID, check, birth certificate, or other official paperwork to someone at SCI Somerset? Or do you need them to sign and return an original? Here's how to send it so it reaches the Business Office and gets handled correctly.
Mail official documents to the inmate's institution, addressed to the Business Office. Format the envelope so staff can route it properly: "Attn: Business Office – Inmate name/inmate number" followed by the institution's address. This works for IDs, credentials, birth certificates, and similar official papers.
Before sending anything, check whether SCI Somerset has a separate mailing address for correspondence. If the facility page lists one, use that address for all official documents and signature requests - not the general institution address.
Sending an original document that needs your loved one's signature? Mail it to the institution Business Office, not the housing unit. The Business Office handles the signing process inside the facility.
Once the Business Office receives the original, staff will arrange a time for the inmate to review and sign it. After signing, the Business Office collects postage from the inmate and mails the document back to you. Keep in mind: originals sent through this process are for review and return only. Inmates aren't allowed to keep them.
- Confirm the correct mailing address - Check the SCI Somerset facility page to see whether there’s a separate mailing address you’re required to use for official and original documents.
- Address it to the Business Office - Write “Attn: Business Office – Inmate name/inmate number” and then the institution’s mailing address (or the separate mailing address if one is listed).
- Make the request clear - In your cover note, state that the enclosed original needs the inmate’s signature and must be returned, and repeat the inmate’s name and number.
- Mail the original for coordination and return - Send the original to the Business Office so staff can arrange review/signature and collect postage for the return mailing.
Note: Inmates may not keep original documents that are sent in for review and signature. If you want them to have something for their records, send a copy separately.
Not sure which address to use or how to format the envelope? Call SCI Somerset's mailroom or Business Office to confirm the current mailing address and how they handle signature requests.
