Legal Mail vs Regular Mail at Scott's Bluff County: Which Address to Use
Scott's Bluff County uses two different mailing addresses depending on what you're sending. Using the right one matters—some mail gets scanned and destroyed, while other items sent to the wrong place come right back to you.
You'll choose between a PO Box for routine mail and the jail's physical address for legal mail. Starting September 18, 2025, all non-legal inmate mail must go to: Inmate Name, Inmate Number, Scotts Bluff County Detention Center Nebraska, PO BOX 591, Longview, Texas 75606. Legal mail works differently - it must go directly to the facility: Scotts Bluff County Detention Center, 2522 7th St, Gering, NE 69341.
Note: Label legal mail clearly as "LEGAL MAIL" and send it to 2522 7th St, Gering, NE 69341 - not the PO Box. The routine-mail PO Box (effective September 18, 2025) is PO BOX 591 in Longview, Texas 75606.
Facility Only Mail
- ✓ Legal mail (label it “LEGAL MAIL”) - send to 2522 7th St, Gering, NE 69341
- ✓ Medical mail - send to the facility address (not the PO Box)
- ✓ Magazines - send to the facility address (not the PO Box)
- ✓ Newspapers - send to the facility address (not the PO Box)
- ✓ Books - send to the facility address (not the PO Box)
- ✓ Bulk mailings - send to the facility address (not the PO Box)
The rules here are clear: no legal or medical mail will be accepted at PO BOX 591. Those items must go to the facility where the inmate is housed. Same goes for books, magazines, newspapers, and bulk mailings - send any of these to the Longview PO Box and they'll be returned to sender. If you're sending something in one of those categories, skip the PO Box entirely and use the facility address.
Send mail to the wrong address and it may never reach your loved one the way you intended - or at all. Mail sent to PO BOX 591 gets processed, delivered electronically to the inmate, and then destroyed. It won't be returned or released. The detention center says there are no exceptions to these guidelines, so double-check the category before you drop anything in the mailbox. And remember: magazines, bulk mailings, newspapers, and books mailed to PO BOX 591 will be returned to sender.
Important: No exceptions to these mail guidelines. Anything sent to PO BOX 591 is processed, delivered electronically, then destroyed - not returned.
- Decide what type of mail you’re sending - If it’s legal mail, medical mail, or items like books/magazines/newspapers/bulk mailings, it must go to the facility address (not the PO Box).
- Use the facility address for legal mail (and label it clearly) - Send legal mail to Scotts Bluff County Detention Center, 2522 7th St, Gering, NE 69341 and mark it “LEGAL MAIL.”
- Use the PO Box for routine, non-legal mail (starting Sept. 18, 2025) - Address it to Inmate Name and the Sheriff’s Office “Inmate Number,” and mail it to PO BOX 591, Longview, Texas 75606.
- Follow the PO Box limits before you seal the envelope - Include a return address, keep it no larger than 8.5" x 11", send no more than 5 pages, and include no more than 1 photo per mailing.
- Mail with the electronic-processing outcome in mind - Anything sent to PO BOX 591 is processed and delivered electronically to the inmate, then destroyed (not returned or released).
