What to Pack (and What to Leave Home) for Visiting Day at SCCC
Packing for a visit at South Central Corrections Center (SCCC) comes down to keeping things simple: a few approved items in clear containers, everything else stays home.
Small Items Clear Bag
- ✓ Coins in a clear sandwich bag or transparent plastic pouch (for vending machines)
Need medication or medical equipment to get through the visit? It's allowed - but you have to do it right. Bring items like nitroglycerin, insulin (and supplies), oxygen, or an asthma inhaler in the original container only, with just enough for the visiting period. Extra doses or loose pills can slow you down at check-in or get denied altogether.
Note: If you’ll need medication during visitation, notify staff in advance and again when you arrive. For special medical equipment (like a walker or wheelchair), bring a physician’s statement.
Infant Supplies
- ✓ One clear carry-all
- ✓ 6 diapers
- ✓ 1 blanket
- ✓ 3 clear plastic bottles of prepared infant beverage
- ✓ 1 clear plastic no-spill toddler cup
- ✓ 3 unopened vendor containers of baby food
- ✓ 1 plastic pacifier, teether and/or rattle
- ✓ 1 small plastic spoon
- ✓ 1 unopened package of baby wipes
Thinking of mailing something to your loved one? Know the rules first. Offenders cannot receive food, clothing, cash, money orders, checks, stamps, stamped envelopes, or other items through the mail. If you want to help, stick to what the facility actually accepts - don't risk putting restricted items in an envelope.
Warning: Bringing drugs, alcohol, firearms, or any other prohibited item into a correctional facility is a criminal offense under Missouri statute 217.360 and can lead to prosecution.
- Notify the case manager ahead of time - Give advance notice so staff are aware of your medical needs during visitation.
- Bring a physician’s statement for special equipment - If you use a walker, wheelchair, or have surgically implanted metal hardware, have documentation with you.
- Tell staff again when you arrive - Check in and clearly notify staff that you’ll need medication during the visit.
Details matter at the gate. Life-maintaining medications and medical equipment must be in their original containers, with only the dosage you'll need during the visit. This applies to nitroglycerin, insulin and supplies, oxygen, and asthma inhalers. Bring what you need, leave the rest locked in your car.
Time your arrival carefully. You can pull into the parking lot no earlier than 30 minutes before visiting starts, and entry is first-come, first-served. Showing up in that window - ready to go - makes a real difference in how smoothly things begin.
Note: No person or pet may remain in a vehicle on institutional grounds during visits.
Dress code trips people up more than you'd think. SCCC prohibits tight, transparent, or revealing clothing, along with gang-related symbols, inflammatory graphics, and camouflage. Skirts, dresses, and shorts can't be shorter than the top of your kneecap when standing. If you're unsure, go conservative - it beats getting turned away at the door.
