Dress Code for Visits to SMCI: What to Wear (and What Not to Wear)
SMCI follows the Mississippi Department of Corrections dress code for visitors. Dress modestly, keep your outfit simple, and you'll avoid problems at the gate.
The baseline rule for visits at South Mississippi Correctional Institution (SMCI) is simple: dress modestly. Not sure if something's too revealing? Go with the more conservative option. Getting turned away at the gate isn't worth the risk.
Shirts are required, and some warm-weather tops won't pass inspection. Tank tops, crop tops, sleeveless shirts, and anything showing your midriff are all off-limits. Stick with a regular T-shirt or a top with sleeves that provides full coverage.
Shoes are required, and open-toe styles aren't allowed. Wear closed-toe shoes to avoid getting stopped at check-in.
Prohibited Clothing
- ✓ Tank tops
- ✓ Crop tops
- ✓ Bare midriffs
- ✓ Sleeveless tops
- ✓ Visiting without underwear
- ✓ Visiting without a bra (for women)
Keep it simple: a standard shirt with sleeves, closed-toe shoes, and clothes you can move in comfortably. Women should wear a bra. I'd also suggest skipping extra layers you don't need - straightforward clothing makes the entry process smoother.
Reminder: If your top or undergarments don’t meet the dress code (for example, a tank top or no bra), you can lose your visit that day.
On MDOC prison grounds - including SMCI - you can be searched at any time. That includes your person, vehicle, and anything you bring with you. Expect this level of screening so there are no surprises.
- ✓ Cell phones
- ✓ Wallets
- ✓ Purses
- ✓ Handbags
- ✓ Change purses
- ✓ Excessive clothing
- ✓ Similar personal items (leave them locked in your vehicle)
- Dress simply - Modest, straightforward clothing helps you get through screening without delays.
- Keep clothing to what you’ll actually wear - “Excessive clothing” should stay locked in your vehicle.
- Be ready for searches - On MDOC grounds, you (and your belongings and vehicle) can be searched at any time.
- Lock up personal items before you head in - Leave phones, wallets, purses/handbags, and similar items secured in your vehicle.
