What to Wear (and What Not to Wear) When Visiting Southeastern Correctional Institution
SCI is strict about what you wear into the visiting area. Use the checklists below so you don't get delayed at screening or turned away at the door.
Sci Quick Checklist
- ✓ No hats
- ✓ No sunglasses
- ✓ No see-through clothing
- ✓ No tight-fitting clothing (including yoga pants, spandex, and leggings)
- ✓ No large or excessive jewelry
- ✓ No camouflage-pattern clothing
- ✓ No shirts that expose the midriff
- ✓ No shirts that expose the upper chest/cleavage
- ✓ No open-toe shoes
- ✓ No boots that extend more than 1 inch above the ankle
- ✓ No coats, sweaters, jackets, hoodies, or other outer garments in the visiting area (plan to remove them at entry)
- ✓ No smart watches or Fitbit-style fitness trackers
- ✓ Turn your phone completely off before entry (not just silent or vibrate)
- ✓ Use the free lockers in the entry building for items that cannot go in
- ✓ Wear only what you can keep on for the whole visit. All attire worn into the facility must remain worn for the duration of the visit, and you cannot carry extra clothing in with you.
If your outfit is see-through or tight-fitting, it is likely to be a problem at SCI. That includes common items like yoga pants, spandex, and leggings. Tops matter too. Shirts that expose your midriff or show upper chest/cleavage are not allowed.
Plan to leave your outerwear at the door. Coats, sweaters, jackets, hoodies, and similar outer garments are not permitted in the visiting area. You'll need to remove them at entry and store them along with anything else that can't go inside. One more thing: whatever you wear into the facility must stay on for the entire visit (coats and gloves being the exception), and you cannot carry extra clothing in with you.
Leave smart watches and Fitbit-style fitness trackers at home. If you forget, plan to secure yours before you enter.
Your phone needs to be turned off completely before entry, not just set to silent or vibrate. If you show up with items that can't go inside, SCI has free lockers available in the entry building.
Keep jewelry simple. SCI doesn't allow large or excessive pieces, and bulky items can slow you down at screening. Footwear matters too: skip open-toe shoes, and avoid boots that extend more than 1 inch above the ankle. Either one can stop your visit before it starts.
Everyone passes through a metal detector before entering SCI. If you have a pacemaker, joint replacement, or another medical reason you might set it off, bring documentation. You'll need to show it before entering, and SCI will keep a note on file for future visits.
