Visiting with Children at St. Bernard Parish Jail: Rules, Allowed Baby Items, and Limits

Anyone under 18 must stay with a parent or legal guardian the entire time they're on facility grounds. No exceptions.

Reminder: Children can’t be left alone on facility grounds. You’re responsible for their behavior during the visit, and staff can end the visit if a child becomes disruptive.

Infant Items

  • Up to four diapers
  • Two vacuum-sealed jars of baby food
  • Two plastic bottles of milk or juice
  • One change of clothing
  • One baby blanket (maximum 48 inches by 48 inches)
  • One clear plastic bag of baby wipes

Bringing infant supplies? Pack smart. All permitted baby items - except the blanket - must fit in a single clear plastic container, like a gallon-size zip-lock bag. Staff will search everything you bring in.

Certain situations can block a minor visit entirely. Anyone with a current or prior conviction for sex crimes involving minors cannot visit with a child unless the warden grants an exception.

Visiting with Children at St. Bernard Parish Jail: Rules, Allowed Baby Items, and Limits
  1. Pack only what’s permitted - for an infant, that means up to four diapers, two vacuum-sealed jars of baby food, two plastic bottles of milk or juice, one change of clothing, one baby blanket (max 48" x 48"), and one clear plastic bag of baby wipes.
  2. Use one clear container for the small items - put everything except the baby blanket into a single clear plastic container, like a gallon-size zip-lock bag.
  3. Keep it minimal - stick to the allowed quantities so you don’t get turned away at the door or have to throw items out.
  4. Plan for a search at entry - baby items are subject to search, so pack in a way that’s easy to inspect and reseal.

Before you make the trip, plan how you'll keep your child calm. Staff can end the visit if a child becomes disruptive. Double-check visiting hours ahead of time - the Department directs visitors to the facility's Hours of Operation on the locations page for current schedules.
