How to Address Mail to Someone at Taylorville and What Happens After You Mail It
Writing to someone at Taylorville? The address format matters — and what they receive may not be the original letter you mailed. Here's how to address it correctly, plus what happens to non-privileged mail after it arrives.
Send mail to Taylorville Correctional Center at: 1144 Illinois Route 29, Taylorville, IL 62568. On the first line, write the person's full name and IDOC number together (for example: "Individual in Custody Name & IDOC#"). This name-and-number line is how the mailroom routes your letter to the right person.
When your mail reaches Taylorville (and other IDOC facilities), non-privileged mail goes through a scanning process. IDOC scans or photocopies all incoming non-privileged correspondence. What does this mean for you? The person you're writing to will likely receive a scanned image of your letter rather than the original paper you sent.
- Mailroom staff scan the envelope - they scan the front and back of the envelope in color.
- They scan each item inside - each piece of mail is scanned in color, item by item.
- The scans are turned into PDFs - PDF images of the scanned documents are created.
- The PDFs are uploaded to the individual’s Bulletin Board - the images are posted to the individual’s Bulletin Board for access.
- The individual is notified to view it on a tablet - they receive a notification that new scanned documents are available to download and view on their tablet.
Note: Once IDOC scans non-privileged mail, they don't return the original documents to senders.
Need to keep an original for your records? Don't mail it. Instead, send a copy and keep the original at home - anything sent through general correspondence won't come back after scanning.
Privileged and legal mail works differently. IDOC does not copy, scan, or reproduce privileged correspondence - it's handled separately from the standard scanning process.
After the mailroom uploads your scanned mail as PDFs to the person's Bulletin Board, they'll get a notification that new documents are available. From there, they can download and view them on their tablet.
No tablet access? IDOC provides paper photocopies of the mail instead.
