How Video Visits Work at USP Florence for SMU and SHU Inmates

At USP Florence, video visiting is standard for anyone outside General Population - including inmates in the Special Management Unit (SMU). You won't sit together in the main visiting room. Instead, your loved one uses the video visiting room in their housing unit while you use the video units in the Visiting Room.

Special Housing Unit (SHU) visits work the same way. There's no in-person contact - everything goes through a video-conference station.

Expect a two-hour limit. Video visits for non–General Population inmates are typically capped at two hours. SHU rules are stricter: inmates get just one two-hour visit per visitation day.

Heads up: All video conference visits end 30 minutes before the visiting room’s regular closing time.

Two hours is the baseline because video booths are limited. If extra booths happen to be open, staff may allow more time - but don't count on it.

SMU inmates also have a monthly cap: five visits maximum. Keep that in mind when planning your trips.

  1. Have the inmate submit a written request - SMU inmates must send a request in writing.
  2. Send it to the Unit Manager - the request goes to the Unit Manager.
  3. Do it at least one week ahead - the request must be submitted at least one week in advance of the expected visit.

Note: All regular SMU visitation goes through video. Additional approval or verification rules may apply depending on your relationship to the inmate.

Here's something that can make or break your visit: SHU video booths fill up on a first-come, first-served basis. Arriving early means you're more likely to get a slot right away instead of waiting around.
