What You Can — and Can't — Mail to an Inmate at Washita County Jail
Mail rules can feel picky, but following them closely is the fastest way to get your letter delivered. Here's how to address mail correctly, avoid the envelope mistake that gets items returned, and understand what the jail will — and won't — accept.
Address every letter with the inmate’s full name, including their middle name, followed by the jail’s mailing address. Use this format: Inmate Full Name (Including Middle Name), Washita County Jail, 400 North McClary, Cordell, OK 73632.
Keep the envelope clean and simple. At Washita County Jail, any writing or drawings beyond the addressee's name and address and the return name and address will get your mail rejected and returned. Skip the stickers, doodles, and extra notes.
Washita County Jail allows unlimited mail as long as you use the correct postage. Letters aren't limited by length, content, or destination - except for correspondence with other jails and prisons. The main restrictions are about safety: mail can be rejected if it's considered offensive under community and legal standards, or if it threatens another person.
Note: All incoming and outgoing mail is opened and checked for contraband, even if it isn't usually read. Outgoing mail may be read if staff have reason to believe it could threaten someone's safety or jail security.
Books Mags
- ✓ Crossword puzzle books are allowed only if they’re purchased through commissary.
- ✓ All other magazines and newspapers are prohibited.
Paperback books are available through the jail library for checkout. You can also mail paperbacks in, but anything sent becomes property of Washita County Jail - so don't send a book you need back.
Legal mail is handled differently. Letters from attorneys, courts, or elected public officials will be opened in the inmate’s presence.
The jail generally doesn't mail packages. The exception: packages containing legal materials sent from inmates to attorneys, courts, or elected public officials.
Mail is received and delivered Monday through Saturday, except on holidays. If you mail something right before a holiday, expect an extra delay.
