Phone calls, messaging, and setting up accounts

In Mississippi state prisons (and some private facilities), phone service runs through Global Tel*Link (GTL). MDOC has negotiated a reduced call rate of $0.039 per minute, which helps with budgeting. For account setup, billing, or call issues, contact GTL customer service at 1-877-650-4249. MDOC lists that same number for situations where your phone is blocked from receiving inmate calls, and it provides a separate provider number for people connected to inmates housed at EMCF.

County jails often run things differently. DeSoto County, for example, uses Smart Communications for its inmate telephone system and directs people to Smart Communications to set up an account. Some facilities that use Smart Communications also point families to SmartInmate, an online communication system that's free to sign up for.

  1. Confirm the provider for that specific facility. Mississippi includes state, regional, county, and private facilities, and the phone vendor is not always the same.
  2. Contact the vendor (not just the facility). For MDOC and many connected facilities, GTL support is the starting point for billing, account questions, and blocked-call issues.
  3. Double-check what you are relying on for updates. MDOC posts information in multiple places, but some content (like social media posts) may require you to log in before you can view it.
  4. Ask your loved one to verify their side. If the facility uses an account-based system, have them confirm they are enrolled and using the correct dialing or account process required for their housing location.

Common Questions

Q
Can I bring my cell phone or other electronics when I visit?

No. MDOC warns that cell phones are contraband and that bringing or sending them can lead to prosecution for introduction of contraband. When you visit, MDOC says you must leave items like your cell phone locked in your vehicle.

Q
Who do I call if I cannot receive calls from an inmate or if calls are blocked?

For MDOC facilities, MDOC lists the telephone service provider number 1-877-650-4249 for blocked-call issues. MDOC also directs people with account or billing questions to GTL customer service at 1-877-650-4249.
