Facility rules you should know before visiting or sending items
Some visits require extra approval. NMCD allows special visits (including for visitors traveling over 500 miles) through a Special Visit Request form (CD-100201.3). These requests need initial approval and then final approval from the Deputy Warden. Not sure who can approve what? Call the facility and ask for the right contact for visitation questions.
Tip: If you're screened with an ION drug scan device, know that NMCD says it can register minute traces of residue from everyday activities. A positive reading does not necessarily indicate drug use.
- ✓ Tobacco products and related devices may be prohibited on facility property, leave them in your vehicle
- ✓ Expect facility staff to enforce property rules at the entrance and in lobbies, especially around what you can bring inside
Common Questions
Q
Will an inmate still receive physical mail now that NMCD uses tablets?
In NMCD facilities using the new system, NMCD states Smart Communications tablets replace physical mail by digitally uploading mail to inmate tablets. Other facilities can have different setups and addresses, including third-party digital mail centers, so always verify the current mail instructions for the specific jail or prison.
Q
What items are commonly prohibited at facility lobbies or during visits?
Some facilities prohibit items like food, beverages, and cell phones in the lobby, and they may ban smoking anywhere on facility grounds. You can save yourself a lot of stress by leaving these items secured in your vehicle before you enter.
