Common Questions

Q
How long are inmate phone calls?

In Rhode Island DOC, all telephone calls are limited to 20 minutes except calls between an inmate and their attorney. If you are expecting a longer call, it usually needs to fall under an exception like attorney communication.

Q
Can someone with a criminal record visit an inmate?

In Rhode Island DOC, if you are not an immediate family member and you have certain criminal-justice involvement (including a felony record, pending charge, misdemeanor drug-related record, a nolo contendere plea, or probation), RIDOC states you cannot visit unless approved by the ADIO or the facility Warden. If this applies to you, your next step is to ask about the approval process for that specific facility.

Q
Who can deposit money into an inmate's account?

RIDOC states the depositor generally must be on the inmate’s visiting list to deposit funds, but there is a 30-day grace period during which anyone can deposit while the inmate adds people to the list. RIDOC also states you must show a photo ID to make any deposit.

Q
What vendor channels are available to add funds?

RIDOC lists Access Secure Deposits (Access Corrections) as an option for deposits by phone, online, kiosks, cash locations, or by mail. RIDOC also notes it has a commissary contract with Keefe Commissary Network that can allow deposits through retail outlets or a website. If your loved one is at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility, their handbook lists TouchPay options (including phone, online, and a lobby kiosk) tied to a specific facility number.
