How to Request a Medical Exemption from the Body Scanner (Bedford Hills / NYS Facilities)
If you have a medical reason you can't go through the body image scanner, you can request an exemption ahead of time. The current DOCCS exemption process took effect 7/22/2025 and requires submitting a request form for review before your planned visit.
At Bedford Hills and other NYS DOCCS facilities, the body image scanner is part of visitor screening. You need to pass through it to enter and access full-contact visitation - which is why getting an exemption approved beforehand matters.
To request a medical exemption, use the DOCCS exemption form and submit it to Central Office Health Services in advance. Medical staff review and approve requests before you show up for your visit.

Mail or deliver the completed form to Central Office Health Services at the address above. Include "Attention: Body Scanner Exemption Request" so it gets routed correctly.
Once you submit the form, medical staff at Central Office Health Services will review your request. Don't wait until the day you're traveling to Bedford Hills - submit early enough to allow time for review.
If you arrive and decline the body image scan, you'll be processed for a non-contact visit only under Directive #4403. That means no full-contact visitation that day.
Non-contact is the only option for visitors who decline scanning. If full-contact visitation matters to you, submit the medical exemption request ahead of time.
Give yourself time. The form has to reach Central Office Health Services at the Albany address listed above before your visit, so last-minute mailing can easily mean a missed trip. Include clear medical documentation explaining why the body scanner is a problem for you, and keep copies for your records.
- Get and complete the DOCCS exemption form - the request has to be made on the official form and submitted in advance.
- Attach supporting medical documentation - include paperwork that clearly explains the medical basis for the exemption.
- Mail or deliver your packet to Central Office Health Services - send it to Harriman State Campus, 1220 Washington Ave., Albany, NY 12226-2050, Attention: Body Scanner Exemption Request.
