How to Send Legal Mail and How Attorneys Visit at Callaway County Jail

The jail expects legal mail to be legitimately addressed to officials who qualify for confidential communication. Don't label something "Legal Mail" unless it truly is correspondence to or from a qualifying legal official, like an attorney. Mislabeling can slow things down and may prevent the mail from being treated as confidential.

Legal mail is opened by jail staff in front of the inmate. Staff check the contents for contraband only - they don't read the documents. This balances confidential legal communication with facility safety.

2. Show there’s no contraband - The inmate must demonstrate to the Detention Officer that nothing prohibited is inside the envelope.
3. Seal the letter after the check - Once the contraband check step is complete, the inmate is allowed to seal the letter at that time.
