How to Send Legal Mail and How Attorneys Visit at Callaway County Jail
Sending confidential legal correspondence or setting up an attorney visit at Callaway County Jail? The details matter. Here's how the jail handles legal mail and what attorneys need to do to see their clients.
Attorney correspondence to someone at Callaway County Jail must go through U.S. Mail and be clearly marked
The jail expects legal mail to be legitimately addressed to officials who qualify for confidential communication. Don't label something "Legal Mail" unless it truly is correspondence to or from a qualifying legal official, like an attorney. Mislabeling can slow things down and may prevent the mail from being treated as confidential.
Legal mail is opened by jail staff in front of the inmate. Staff check the contents for contraband only - they don't read the documents. This balances confidential legal communication with facility safety.
- Present the legal mail before sealing it - Legal Mail must be shown to a Detention Officer before it’s sealed.
- Show there’s no contraband - The inmate must demonstrate to the Detention Officer that nothing prohibited is inside the envelope.
- Seal the letter after the check - Once the contraband check step is complete, the inmate is allowed to seal the letter at that time.
Note: The Detention Officer who witnesses the process will initial the back of the envelope and the front where it’s marked “Legal Mail.”
Attorney consultations must be scheduled ahead of time. Contact Callaway County Jail staff to set up your visit before you arrive.

Attorney visits happen in the standard visitor/inmate security booth. Expect the same secure separation used for regular visits, even though it's an attorney consultation.
Need to get legal paperwork to someone in custody for review or a signature? Jail staff will facilitate passing those documents to the inmate. Plan around this extra step so nothing gets delayed at the last minute.
