How Carteret County's Scanned Mail System Works (Carteret County Detention Center)
Carteret County Detention Center scans most incoming mail and delivers it digitally to inmates' tablets. The original paper letter? It may not come back to you.
Mail that meets the facility's requirements gets scanned and delivered digitally - your loved one reads it on a tablet, not on paper. If you're expecting them to hold your actual letter, that's not how this works. They'll see a digital copy.
This system handles letters and similar paper mail only. Magazines, books, and other publications aren't accepted by the mail processing center.
Legal mail is different: Legal/privileged mail must be mailed directly to the Carteret County Detention Center and clearly marked “Legal Mail.” Jail staff open legal mail in the presence of the inmate.

- ✓ Cash, personal checks, or money orders mailed to the mail processing center
- ✓ Polaroid photos
- ✓ Anything with glitter, glue, tape, 3D elements, or electronic components (lights, music, animation)
- ✓ Magazines, books, packages, or publications of any kind mailed to the mail processing center
Here's something to know: your original letter may not survive the process. Once scanned, physical mail can be destroyed by the facility.
Money works differently. Carteret County Detention Center accepts money orders and certified checks - but you need to mail them directly to the jail, not through the scanning service. The envelope must contain only the money order or certified check, nothing else.
The facility screens all mail for security. Anything flagged as illegal or a security concern gets turned over to authorities for investigation.
Once your letter clears the requirements and gets processed, it shows up as a scan on the inmate's tablet.
After someone is released, they can request digital copies of their scanned mail. The request has to be made by email.
