Missouri DOC allows several categories of people to apply: immediate family, extended family, a significant other, friends, and clergy. Immediate family includes a spouse, legal guardian, parents (including in-laws), siblings, children, grandparents and great-grandparents, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Extended family includes uncles, aunts, and cousins. If you fall into one of these groups, you can submit a visiting application.

One-offender rule: Visitors may visit only one offender unless you are an immediate family member of more than one offender.

If the person you want to visit is a treatment resident at Chillicothe Correctional Center, the visitor pool is more limited. Only immediate family and the designated significant other may visit treatment residents, and only on Saturdays and Sundays. Treatment visits run Saturday and Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. They're scheduled so they don't conflict with treatment classes.

Before You Start

  • The offender’s Missouri Department of Corrections Identification Number (DOC ID)

Filling out the online application for a minor child? You may hit a snag on the identification section. For the minor's Identification Number field, choose "other" as the type and enter "NA" for the number.

  1. Enter the offender’s DOC ID - you cannot submit the online visiting application without it.
  2. Fill out the application completely - make sure you complete all required fields.
  3. Submit the form - once you finish the application, it is electronically sent to the institutional case manager for processing.

Wait for final approval: You must be pre-approved to visit. Do not attempt a visit until final approval is received.

After you apply, the Department runs a criminal history check. This is a standard step before anyone gets added to the approved visitor list.

Once you click finish and submit, your application goes electronically to the institutional case manager. The case manager reviews and processes it. The DOC says applications are handled in a timely manner, though no specific turnaround time is given.

How you find out: The offender gets notified of visiting approval and is responsible for letting you know your status.

Even if you already have a trip planned, wait until you have final approval before showing up. Arriving without approval can mean getting turned away at the door. Not sure where things stand? Contact the offender's institution and ask about your application status. Have the offender's DOC ID ready so staff can pull up the right record.

If your visiting application is denied, you can appeal in writing. Your appeal letter must be mailed within 30 days to the Deputy Division Director of Adult Institutions at the Missouri Department of Corrections: 2729 Plaza Drive, PO Box 236, Jefferson City, MO 65102.

Reapplying after a denial: Visitors who are denied may reapply for visiting status after one year.

If you have questions while filling out the online application, or you need to check on your status, contact the offender's residing institution. Keep the offender's DOC ID handy. You'll need it for the application, and it helps staff pull up the correct record. Remember: the offender is the one who gets notified of approval. They're responsible for letting you know whether you've been approved to visit.
