Visitation

How to Get Approved to Visit Someone at Eastern Correctional Institution (ECI)

Getting approved to visit at Eastern Correctional Institution (ECI) comes down to two things: being added to the approved visitor list and submitting an application with the right documents.

ECI caps each incarcerated person's approved visitor list at 18 people total, including both adults and minors. If the list is full, someone has to be removed before a new visitor can be added. Talk through who will apply before you start filling out paperwork.

Note: Legal, law enforcement, consular, local/state Family Services, and Juvenile Court officials must register with the facility before visiting. They do not count toward the 18 approved visitors.

Whether you visit in person or by video, you need to be on the approved list first. Video visits are only available to approved visitors, so getting added is a key step even if you plan to visit remotely. Since the list is capped at 18 people, confirm you are included before trying to schedule a video visit.

Documents to Attach

  • If you are age 16 or older, attach a copy of an approved photo ID to your visitor application.
  • If the visitor is under age 16, attach a copy of the minor’s birth certificate to the visitor application.
  1. Fill out the visitor application completely - Missing information can hold things up, so take your time and double-check what you wrote.
  2. Attach the required document(s) before you submit - Applicants age 16 and older need a copy of an approved photo ID. Minors under 16 need a copy of their birth certificate.
  1. Schedule your visit in advance - Visits at ECI are by appointment only.
  2. Call or email the prison to set the appointment - Use the facility’s contact options to lock in a date and time before you go.

Reminder: Call the prison the day before your scheduled visit to confirm the facility’s visitation status.

Once your paperwork is processed, your ability to visit (including by video) depends on whether you are on the approved visitor list. If you are visiting in an official capacity (legal, law enforcement, consular, Family Services, or Juvenile Court), you register with the facility separately and do not count toward the 18-person limit.
