What Happens to an Inmate's Money When They're Released from Franklin County Jail
Release day is already a lot to manage. Here's how Franklin County Jail handles leftover money on a detainee's account—and what to do if the funds don't show up right away.
When someone is released from Franklin County Jail, any remaining balance on their account gets loaded onto a debit card. No cash - just a card with whatever funds were left.
If Not Released Pickup
- ✓ Return to the Detention Center Monday–Friday, 8:00am–4:00pm, to pick up the debit card.
- Write a notarized request - Prepare a notarized letter asking for the debit card to be mailed.
- Include return postage - Add a stamped, addressed envelope for the Detention Center to mail the debit card.
- Mail it to the commissary contact - Send the notarized letter and stamped envelope to: Attention: Commissary Deputy #2, Justice Ln., Union, MO 63084.
There's a deadline to keep in mind. At the end of October each year, any unclaimed funds still sitting at the facility get forwarded to the Missouri State Treasurer's Office. Once that transfer happens, you'll need to claim the money through the Treasurer's Unclaimed Properties Division - not the jail.
Practical Tips
- ✓ If the debit card wasn’t issued at release, plan for an in-person pickup Monday–Friday, 8:00am–4:00pm at the Detention Center.
- ✓ If you need it mailed, send the notarized request and stamped, addressed envelope as soon as you can so it’s handled before the end-of-October unclaimed-funds transfer.
- ✓ Keep copies of what you send (and any mailing receipt) so you can track what was requested and when.
Reminder: Unclaimed funds get forwarded at the end of October each year. After that, claims go through the Missouri State Treasurer's Unclaimed Properties Division.
