Prepare a personal letter for someone at Goose Creek Correctional Center

Under Goose Creek Correctional Center's August 11, 2022 mail requirements, correspondence you send from outside the Department of Corrections must be on white paper or white lined paper. Do not use construction paper or paper heavier than 24 pounds. Write with graphite pencil or regular black or blue ink, not gel ink.

  • ✓ No crayons, markers or colored pencils
  • ✓ No paint, correction fluid or correction tape
  • ✓ No colored or warped paper
  • ✓ No powders

For a personal letter, use a commercially produced white envelope no larger than 9 by 12 inches. Include a return address with your full first and last name, and write on the envelope in graphite pencil or regular black or blue ink. Envelopes with drawings or extra markings are not accepted.

Do not attach address labels, stickers or other items with adhesive. Labels and stickers affixed by the U.S. Postal Service are exempt from this restriction. Check the envelope’s construction, too:

  • ✓ No cardboard, padding or corrugated material
  • ✓ No tear-resistant material
  • ✓ No paper heavier than 24 pounds
  • ✓ No security-screening features

Use authorized, sufficient postage. Mail with unauthorized or insufficient postage is refused and returned to the U.S. Postal Service.

Acceptable paper and an acceptable envelope do not make prohibited contents acceptable. Staff reject prohibited incoming mail in part or in full. Do not include additional mail from people outside your immediate family, or items taped, pasted or otherwise joined to another item, unless taped by security staff.

  • ✓ No glitter, stamps, stickers or other adhesive additions on the paper
  • ✓ No lipstick, perfume, oils, incense, unusual stains, body fluids or other foreign or unknown substances
  • ✓ No loose postage stamps or labels
  • ✓ No stationery, pens, pencils or spare envelopes
  • ✓ No unused postcards, bookmarks or calendars
  • ✓ No candy, gum or other food

Cash and personal checks are not accepted through the mail system.

The content rules prohibit threats or plans of harm or criminal activity, arrangements to move contraband, escape assistance, and material encouraging violence or group disruption. They also prohibit instructions for making or using weapons, producing alcohol, or making or cultivating drugs or poisons, along with tattoo information or templates. Do not include code the reader does not understand, material that helps someone write in code, or content that violates a court order. Material that threatens facility security, good order, discipline or prisoner rehabilitation is also prohibited.

Sexually explicit material is prohibited, including depicted nudity and graphically described sexual acts. The exceptions cover departmentally purchased or acquired educational, medical/scientific or artistic materials, and qualifying materials purchased or possessed by prisoners and approved case by case by the institution head or designee.
