Video Visit Rules and Limits for IDOC: How Many Visits You Can Schedule and Why Visits Get Cut Off

Each person in IDOC custody can receive only one video visit per day. If someone else already connected with them earlier, you'll have to wait until tomorrow. Coordinate with other family members before booking to avoid conflicts.

There's also a weekly cap: two video visits per week, per person in custody. This applies even if your loved one is in restrictive housing - those visits count toward the same limit. Space out your visits and keep track of what's been used so you don't hit a wall when you try to book.

IDOC limits each video visit to three approved visitors for people in general population or protective custody. Want to include multiple relatives? Make sure everyone is on the approved list and keep the group to three - otherwise your visit could get canceled before it starts.

Every IDOC video visit is monitored live and recorded. By using video visitation, you're consenting to that recording. Assume anything you say can be reviewed later and keep the conversation appropriate for a monitored setting.

Attorney-client warning: Attorney-client privilege does not apply to IDOC video visitation. Every video visit is recorded, regardless of who the visitor is.

Termination Behaviors

  • Violating visitation rules (a visit can be ended immediately, with or without warning)
  • Using inappropriate conduct or language (termination can be immediate, and may also risk suspension from future visitation depending on the seriousness)
  • Not staying stationary in a seated position (non-stationary visits are terminated)
Video Visit Rules and Limits for IDOC: How Many Visits You Can Schedule and Why Visits Get Cut Off
  1. Pick your top visit days first - Because an individual in custody may receive only 1 video visit per day, coordinate with other family members so you don’t accidentally book on a day that’s already used.
  2. Space visits across the week - The limit is 2 video visits per week, so spreading them out helps you avoid using both early and being stuck waiting until the next week.
  3. Keep a simple tally - Track how many video visits have already happened that week so you don’t waste time scheduling a slot that won’t be allowed.
  1. Stay seated and still - IDOC can terminate any visitation that isn’t stationary in a seated position.
  2. Keep language and behavior clean - Inappropriate conduct or language can trigger immediate termination, sometimes without warning.
  3. Follow visitation rules every time - Rule violations can end the visit on the spot and may also lead to suspension from future visitation depending on the seriousness.
  • Confirm everyone who plans to join is an approved visitor
  • Keep the group to no more than three approved visitors for the video visit (for general population or protective custody)

Plan your conversation accordingly: Every IDOC video visit is monitored live and recorded. Attorney-client privilege doesn't apply - treat every call as if it's being reviewed, no matter who's on the line.
