What to Bring (and What to Leave at Home) When Visiting Someone in an Illinois Prison

Leave all electronics behind - cell phones, tablets, smart watches, none of it is allowed in the Visiting Room. If you bring them to the entrance, you'll have to store them before going in.

  • Food
  • Drink
  • Smoking materials
  • Currency
  • Packages
  • Purses
  • Bags
  • Books
  • Magazines
  • Sunglasses
  • Personal keys

Brought something you can't take inside? Look for the small lockers in the Visiting Center - they're free to use. Store your items, accept responsibility for them, and you can carry the locker key in with you.

Medication rules are strict. The only exceptions: physician-prescribed heart medication (in a properly labeled container) or an asthma inhaler. No other pills or medications are allowed in the Visiting Room. If you need one of these items, bring only what's necessary and keep it in its original container.

Dress Code

  • Wear dresses, shorts, and skirts that extend to the knee.
  • Skip see-through or sheer clothing.
  • Don’t wear clothing with holes, tears, or cutouts above the knee.
  • Leave at home: tube tops, halter tops, tank tops, swimsuits, and swimsuit tops.
