When you arrive, don't walk straight in. Call first - staff will tell you when it's safe to enter. Plan to wait for direction before heading into the Visitor Center.

First-time visitors have extra paperwork. Adults must complete a Prospective Visitor's Interview (PVI) form (DOC 0148) unless you already received prior approval through the electronic PVI process.

ID and Vehicle

  • If you’re 18 or older, bring two forms of identification.
  • One of your two IDs must be a current state-issued photo ID.
  • Visitors under 18 are not required to show a photo ID at any facility.

You'll need to provide vehicle information at check-in. Have those details ready so you're not scrambling in the parking lot while the line moves.

Expect a security screening. Officers at the Visitor Center will conduct a body search before you're allowed to continue with your visit.

Staff may also ask questions or request background information. IDOC allows them to interview potential visitors to determine whether someone might pose a threat to facility safety, security, or order.

Warning: If you’re intoxicated or under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you will not be permitted entry.

Even if you arrive prepared, a visit can still be denied, suspended, or restricted. The facility's Chief Administrative Officer has authority to do so based on security and safety requirements, space availability, disruptive conduct, abuse of visiting privileges, or violations of state or federal laws or departmental rules.
