What to Expect When You Arrive for an IDOC Visit: Check-in, ID, and Security
Your first visit can feel stressful—mostly because you don't know what to expect when you get there. Here's a walkthrough of the arrival process at an IDOC facility: check-in, ID verification, searches, and health screening.
When you arrive, don't head straight inside. IDOC requires visitors to call the facility first for guidance. Staff will tell you when it's safe to enter. This is standard - just follow their instructions and wait until you're directed to come in.
Plan to arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled visit time. That buffer gives you time for check-in and any screening steps, so you’re not rushing (or risking being late) before you ever get to the visiting room.
ID and Vehicle
- ✓ Two forms of identification for adult visitors
- ✓ One of those IDs must be a current state-issued photo ID
- ✓ Vehicle information (be ready to provide it during check-in)
You'll go through security screening at the Visitor Center. IDOC requires all visitors to submit to a body search conducted by officers. Staff may also interview you or request background information to determine whether you could pose a safety or security concern. Answer questions directly and keep your information consistent.
Warning: If you’re intoxicated or under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you will not be permitted entry.
Before you’re allowed in, you’ll go through a COVID-19 symptom check and a temperature screening. Build a little extra time into your arrival for this step, especially during busy visiting periods.
The facility provides a surgical mask to all visitors over the age of two. If staff needs to confirm your identity, you may be asked to briefly lower your face covering when entering or exiting.
