Grace Period Guide: What to Do If You Mail to the Wrong Address in December 2025
Accidentally mailed a letter to Lumley Unit instead of the ADCRR Digital Mail Processing Center? You're not alone — and there's good news. ADCRR built in a one-month grace period for exactly this situation.
ADCRR’s transition grace period runs from December 15, 2025 through January 15, 2026. During that window, paper personal mail that’s mistakenly sent to prison complexes (including Lumley Unit) will still be processed and provided to the person in custody, instead of being automatically bounced back to you.
Here's why this matters: starting December 15, 2025, ADCRR is shifting to a digital mail system. Personal letters now go to the ADCRR Digital Mail Processing Center in Texas, where they're scanned and uploaded to the inmate's secure tablet. Not everything falls under this change. Legal mail, parcels, publications, and official government mail are excluded - they follow separate handling rules.
Mailed personal paper mail to Lumley Unit during the grace period? ADCRR says they'll still process it and get it to your loved one. The item gets handled under the new system rather than bounced back as a mistake. So if old habits kicked in and you sent mail directly to the prison complex, don't panic. The grace period exists to keep one wrong-address envelope from turning into a month of missed communication.
- ✓ Inmate’s full first and last name
- ✓ Inmate’s ADCRR/ADC number
- ✓ Prison complex
- ✓ Assigned unit
Note: Legal mail, parcels, publications, and official government mail are not part of the December 15, 2025 digital-mail requirement, so they’re handled separately from personal mail scanning.
Once the grace period ends, the rules get stricter. Starting January 15, 2026, mail sent directly to prison complexes (including Lumley Unit) will be returned to sender - not processed and delivered.
Tip: For personal mail after December 15, 2025, send it to the ADCRR Digital Mail Processing Center (not directly to the complex) and make sure the envelope includes the inmate’s full name, ADCRR/ADC number, prison complex, and assigned unit.
