What to Wear and Bring to the Visiting Room at Moberly Correctional Center: A Practical Checklist
A smooth visit starts before you leave home. Use this checklist to pick clothes that pass the dress code, bring only what's allowed, and know what to expect at security screening.
Dress conservatively for visits at Moberly Correctional Center. Anything that draws attention or raises a security concern is off-limits. That means no tight or excessively baggy clothing, nothing transparent or revealing, and skirts, dresses, or shorts must reach at least the top of the kneecap when you're standing. Top coverage matters, too. Shirts, blouses, and tops must cover the chest, cleavage, back, and stomach, with sleeves that cover the shoulders. Headwear isn't allowed in the visiting room unless it's for verified religious purposes, and even then staff can search it.
Note: Undergarments with wire or metal supports can trigger the metal detectors used during visitor screening. If possible, choose metal-free options to avoid delays.
Allowed Personal Items
- ✓ Coins for vending machines, placed in a clear sandwich bag or transparent plastic pouch
- ✓ Essential medications or life-sustaining medical supplies (for example nitroglycerin, insulin and insulin supplies, oxygen, asthma inhalers), in the original container, and only the dosage needed for the visiting period
- ✓ Advance notice to the institutional case manager if you will need medication or special medical equipment during visitation
- ✓ A heads-up to staff when you arrive if you need to take medication during the visit
- ✓ A physician’s statement if you have special medical equipment (such as a walker, wheelchair, or surgically implanted metal hardware)
Bringing a baby or toddler? Plan ahead and pack light. Missouri DOC facilities limit what infant supplies can come into the visiting room, and clear containers are often required. Confirm the current infant-item list and quantity limits before you drive over so you don't end up hauling essentials back to the car.
Expect searches as part of entry. You, your packages, your children, and your vehicle are all subject to search when you enter prison grounds.
Screening can involve several types of equipment. Missouri DOC facilities use metal detectors, and the department also operates the Intercept full-body scanner, walk-through metal detectors, hand-held metal detectors, and X-ray baggage scanners. All of it is designed to keep weapons, drugs, and other prohibited items out of the facility.
Tip: If something you’re wearing or carrying triggers an alarm, staff may need to do additional screening before you can enter. Keeping metal items to a minimum helps the process move faster.
Physical contact is limited, but not off the table. You're allowed one greeting embrace, one departing embrace, and a brief kiss. Holding hands during the visit is also permitted.
There are specific rules for kids. Children age 6 and under may sit on the offender's lap, unless the offender is a sex offender. An adult visitor must attend to children at all times.
Visiting is a privilege, and violations can lead to sanctions. If sanctions are imposed, the institution will send you a written notice outlining the infraction and the consequences. To appeal a visiting restriction, submit a written appeal to Missouri Department of Corrections at 2729 Plaza Drive, PO Box 236, Jefferson City, MO 65109.
Some violations go beyond sanctions and become criminal cases. Under Missouri State Statute 217.360, bringing drugs, alcoholic beverages, firearms, or any other prohibited article into a correctional facility is a criminal offense. It can carry punishment of up to 15 years in prison. The Missouri Department of Corrections also prohibits substances that may be legal outside a correctional setting, including tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis. Violators will be referred for prosecution.
Reminder: Don't bring anything that could be considered contraband, even if it's legal outside. If you need medication or medical equipment during your visit, notify the case manager in advance and let staff know when you arrive.
