How to Schedule Your First Visit at New Haven Correctional Center

As of December 2, 2024, you don't need to pre-schedule an in-person visit at New Haven Correctional Center. This is a big deal for first-time visitors. The "scheduling" part now mostly means getting approved to visit - and setting up a video visit if you want one.

New Haven CC allows up to two in-person visits per week. Video visits are more limited: only one video visit per week is allowed, and that video visit has to be pre-scheduled.

  1. Ask the inmate to start the Visiting Application Form - If they expect regular visits, they submit each potential visitor’s name and address to their assigned counselor.
  2. Watch for the form to arrive from the inmate - The counselor forwards a copy of the Visiting Application Form to the inmate, and the inmate mails it out to each prospective visitor.
  3. Complete and sign the application - Fill it out carefully and make sure your information matches your ID.
  4. Return the application to the facility where the inmate is housed - You can return it by mail or in person to the facility the inmate is located at.
  5. Wait for approval before planning your visit - At New Haven CC, you must be on the inmate’s approved, active visiting list before you can visit.

Note: Visiting application approval can take two to three weeks. While it’s pending, wardens have discretion to allow a courtesy visit for up to two adult immediate-family visitors.

The simplest way to think about it: in-person visits at New Haven CC don't need to be pre-scheduled. Video visits do. If you want a video visit, complete the Visit Request Form ahead of time - the facility requires it.

Reminder: A visit isn’t scheduled until you receive confirmation from the facility. Check your junk mail folder for confirmation emails or visit-related messages.

  1. Confirm you’re eligible to visit - Video visits still follow the visiting-list rule, so you’ll need to be on the approved, active visiting list.
  2. Complete the Visit Request Form - Video visits must be pre-scheduled using the facility’s request form.
  3. Provide a valid email address - You need a working email address to schedule a video visit and receive the facility’s response.

After submitting your request, don't assume it's set. New Haven CC only considers a visit scheduled once you receive confirmation. Keep an eye on your inbox - and check your junk mail folder too.

Before You Leave

  • Arrive at least 15 minutes early so you have time to check in.

Plan your outfit carefully. New Haven Correctional Center requires proper attire for all visits, and showing up in the wrong clothes can get you turned away at the door.

For video visits, come prepared to show you're confirmed - not just that you submitted a form. The facility's rule is clear: your visit isn't scheduled until you receive confirmation. Check your junk mail if you haven't seen it.

Visits are currently limited to 30 minutes (until further notice) to allow time for disinfecting before and after each visit. Plan around closures too - no visits on state-observed holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Lincoln's Birthday, Washington's Birthday, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

How to Schedule Your First Visit at New Haven Correctional Center
  1. Check your junk mail first - New Haven CC specifically warns that confirmations and visit-related emails may land there.
  2. Verify the email address you used - If the address is wrong, you won’t receive the confirmation that makes the visit “scheduled.”
  3. Follow up with the facility - If you still don’t have a confirmation, contact New Haven CC to sort it out.
  4. Remember the in-person rule - Since December 2, 2024, in-person visits at New Haven CC no longer need to be pre-scheduled.
  1. Confirm the inmate started the application - The process begins with the inmate submitting your name and address to their counselor.
  2. Make sure your application was completed and returned - The prospective visitor must complete and sign the Visiting Application Form and return it to the facility where the inmate is housed.
  3. Plan for processing time - Approval can take two to three weeks, so delays don’t always mean something went wrong.
  4. Ask about a courtesy visit if you’re immediate family - Wardens may allow up to two adult immediate-family visitors to do a courtesy visit before the application is approved.

Good to know: The available facility notices confirm that in-person visits don’t require pre-scheduling and that video visits do. If you have questions about how New Haven CC handles walk-in in-person arrivals day-of, call ahead to confirm the current procedure.
