How to Schedule Your First Visit at an Illinois DOC Facility (step-by-step)
Your first in-person visit goes smoothly when you handle the basics in the right order. Here's how to confirm where your loved one is housed, make sure you're on the approved list, schedule online, and show up ready for check-in.
Start by using the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) inmate search tool to find the person you want to visit. When you locate them, write down the facility where they’re currently housed. You’ll use that facility information when you schedule, and it helps you avoid booking the wrong location if they’ve recently moved.
Before you schedule anything, make sure you're on the incarcerated person's approved visitation list. IDOC staff won't verify your status over the phone, so the most reliable approach is to write your loved one and ask them to confirm you're listed. Skip this step and you risk making the trip only to get turned away at the door.
Once you've confirmed the facility and know you're approved, schedule your visit online through SignUpGenius at the VisitIDOC page (http://www.signupgenius.com/org/visitidoc). Set aside uninterrupted time to complete it - the system times out after 30 minutes of inactivity, so finish in one sitting.
Checkin Items
- ✓ Two forms of identification (one must be a current, state-issued photo ID)
- ✓ Your vehicle information (be ready to provide it during check-in)
- Arrive at least 10 minutes early - IDOC requires you to be at the facility at least 10 minutes before your scheduled visit time so staff can process your entry.
- Check in and follow staff direction - once you’re on site, follow the facility’s check-in process and any instructions you’re given so you’re cleared to enter.
- Complete entry screening - expect a brief screening as part of the normal entry process before you’re allowed into the visiting area.
