Statesville's Dress Code for Visitors: What Passes Inspection and What Doesn't

Adult visitors at Statesville must be dressed appropriately for a prison environment, or the visit won't happen. Staff check clothing at the door. Show up in something that doesn't meet the standard, and you'll be asked to leave and come back wearing something else. Not sure if an outfit will pass? Aim for simple and modest. Anything designed to be revealing - or that looks like it could raise a safety or security concern - is most likely to get flagged.

  • Dresses, shorts, and skirts must extend to the knee.
  • No see-through or sheer clothing.
  • Don’t wear clothing that reveals the buttocks or breasts.
  • No holes, tears, or cutouts in clothing above the knee.

All visitors must wear underwear. Female visitors must wear a bra. If your outfit has built-in support or is meant to be worn without standard undergarments, switch to something that clearly meets this rule before you arrive.

Key Prohibited Examples

  • No tube tops.
  • No halter tops.
  • No tank tops.
  • No swimsuits or swimsuit tops.

Clothing that advertises or suggests Security Threat Groups (gang-affiliated symbols) is prohibited. The same goes for anything else staff see as compromising safety and security - designs, symbols, or messaging tied to gangs or illegal activity. When in doubt, go plain. If you're choosing between two tops and one has bold symbols, slogans, or graphics that could be misunderstood, pick the simpler option. It'll get you through the entrance faster.

Visiting is a privilege. The facility's Chief Administrative Officer can deny, suspend, or restrict visits for reasons including security needs, space availability, disruptive conduct, abuse of visiting privileges, or violations of state, federal, or departmental rules. What does that mean for you? Your visit can be stopped even after you've made the trip and waited in line. Following the rules - including the dress code - protects your time and keeps your visit on track.

Reminder: Dress-code violations are an enforceable reason to deny a visit. Common issues include too-short skirts or shorts, sheer fabric, holes or cutouts above the knee, prohibited tops like tank or halter styles, and clothing tied to Security Threat Groups.

Key Quick Tips

  • Pick dresses, shorts, and skirts that extend to the knee.
  • Skip tube tops, halter tops, tank tops, swimsuits, and swimsuit tops.
  • Avoid clothing that advertises or suggests Security Threat Groups (gang symbols) or other illegal activity.
  • Bring two forms of ID; one must be a current state-issued photo ID.
  • If you’re an adult visitor (18+), complete the Prospective Visitor’s Interview (PVI) DOC 0148 before your first visit unless you’ve already been approved through the electronic PVI process (legal visitors and government officials are excluded).
